Old Port of Montréal | New Architecture

January 21, 2012

I was going to start this post by saying that these new condo buildings were an interesting contrast to the dilapidated industrial buildings of the old port area, but I think they’re more of an evolution than a contrast. The size and shape of these newer buildings is in keeping with the dimensions of surrounding buildings, and some of the condos provide a modern echo of the styles of the Old Montreal neighbourhood directly north of the port. They’re modern and colourful enough to be interesting, but not so abstract as to be overwhelming. The use of brick and stone and similarly derived colours compliments the construction materials of surrounding buildings and, to me at least, offers a break from the near-ubiquitous use of glass on condominium buildings.
