Kensington Market | Grilling Portuguese-style Sardines on Good Friday

April 14, 2012

Kensington Market is home to several Portuguese fishmongers, and on Good Friday, they organize traditional, open-air sardine grilling right on the small streets in front of their stores. This time around, only the Seven Seas Fish Market was grilling, but it was enough to draw a good crowd and spread the delicious smell over several blocks. Sardine grilling is one of the quintessential Kensington Market events, and some of the fishmongers have been around for decades. The market itself is a vibrant district and a mix of communities, classes and ethnic groups, and an excellent living, affordable market, unlike some of the more upscale, tourist-trap markets. So of course, it has the most amazing food!

Mmmm… this makes me homesick for Papa’s grilled sardines. He would make these delicious sandwiches with nice crusty bread… bolas de sardinha e tomate salsa. Gostoso! 🙂

Kensington Market is a cultural gem, I was so lucky to live on the other side of Spadina.

It definitely has a lot to offer. I’m glad I don’t live too too close–would probably result in weight gain.
