Berlin Wall Watchtower

May 22, 2013

This is the last remaining original watchtower of this type which was part of the Berlin Wall border construction. As it happened, a gentleman from a citizen’s association to preserve the tower was at the site. He had been talking to a couple of young Berlin policemen and showing them the tower because they had not known it was there or what it had been for. He offered to let me climb up inside the tower, but at the last moment I decided I did not want to see things from the perspective of the guards that had once used it. I have this post classed under the architecture category, and it’s sad to think that architecture can also be deployed for malicious purposes.
