Natur-Park Südgelände

June 5, 2016

This relatively new park in Berlin is a former rail yard, shut down in the 1950s, which was taken over by spontaneous vegetation. It opened as a park in the 1990s and is home to a significant variety of plant and animal species, some of which are rare native species. More info can be found here and here (in German).

I couldn’t believe how thick and lush the vegetation was, and it didn’t at all feel like being in a regular city park. Lots of posts to follow as I thought this was an almost magical place, full of history but dynamic and new at the same time.
